In order to fly a 2 seat homebuilt helicopter, like Rotorway or the future mosquito. Is a fixed wing ppl sufficent or do you need a helicopter rating?

You'll need a rotor rating. You can fly a single seat experimental helicopter with a fixed-wing ppl but when you move into a two seat experimental you'll need a rotor rating.

I MAY BE WRONG BUT AS LONG AS YOU FLY SOLO YOU SHOULD STILL BE OK ON ANY PRIVATE PILOTS LICENSE UNLESS THE AIRWORTHY CERTIFICATE SPECIFICALLY STATES THAT YOU NEED A ROTORCRAFT HELICOPTER RATING TO FLY THE EXPERIMENTAL MACHINE.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND PROPER TRAINING BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FLY AN AIRCRAFT THAT YOU HAVE NEVER FLOWN BEFORE ESPECIALLY A HELICOPTER OR A GYROCOPTER. GET THE TRAINING IN AN R22 TO SOLO ENDORCEMENT AND DON'T BE A STATISTIC EVEN IF THE RULES ALLOW YOU TO FLY AN EXPERIMENTAL.
